Alliance
Alliance's downtown echoes the footsteps of its past. It served as a land office for homesteaders, attracting agriculture and livestock producers to the area. Alliance is the "Coal Capital of Nebraska" as the hub for Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad's Powder River Basin coal train operations. Alliance is also a maintenance base for 830 of BNSF's 4,600 locomotives. Central Park: This park, established in 1932, yields the charm and beauty of that era with a glorious lighted fountain, sunken gardens, and rock structures. Additionally, this town boasts a "100 Acres of Parks" area. At Laing Lake children can feed ducks and geese, jog around the nature trail, or try fishing from the footbridge.

Knight Museum of High Plains Heritage: This museum, located in Alliance Central Park, houses many historical attractions. Military memorabilia dating back to the 1870s, railroad exhibits, a turn-of-the-century kitchen, and a parlor of the 1880-1900s are on display. Oglala and Lakota treasures provide one of the finest displays of Indian artifacts in the Midwest. Collections of clothing and artistic handiwork of the natives of this region are gathered here.
Carnegie Arts Center: This center provides gallery space for the exhibition of the work of artists from Nebraska and the surrounding states. Although the primary focus is on the visual arts, literary and performing arts are encouraged and included. Special notice is taken in the areas of Western heritage and ethnic diversity. Traveling shows, workshops, classes, and special programs are held several times a year.
Carhenge: This unique replica of Stonehenge is north of Alliance on U.S. 385. The mysterious stone circle, erected about 2000 B.C. in southern England, intrigued Jim Reinders who created Carhenge on his farm in June 1987. Four years later, over 750 people participated in a festival at which the heel stone, a 1962 Cadillac, was raised using methods of the ancients. To some, Carhenge is art; to some, whimsy; and to others, junk. There is an off-highway parking area, information signs, and picnic facilities; and the admission is free. Carhenge.com
