Grand Island / Hall County Area
The scenic journey begins in the largest community represented along the route. Offering all of the conveniences of a large city, Grand Island is a perfect springboard from Interstate 80 onto Highway 2. Perhaps the most popular visitor to the area is the Sandhill crane. From mid-February to early April, 500,000 Sandhill cranes and over 300 species of other migratory waterfowl visit the central Platte River region. Grand Island has been designated as the number one birding spot in the world by Forbes FYI online magazine. Tours, step-on guides, programs, art shows and sales, and community activities are plentiful for the visitor. Crane Meadows Nature Center is located on the Platte River on 250 acres of beautiful native prairie grass. The center includes crane and wildlife exhibits, seven miles of trails open year-round for hiking, cross country skiing, a projection room, and a gift shop.

Fonner Park: The pounding of hooves can be heard at Fonner Park with live Thoroughbred horse racing available from mid-February to mid-May. Simulcast horse racing, keno casino, and a sports lounge are all open year-round. Fonner Park will board horses free for the traveling public. Numerous civic and agricultural events are held here throughout the year such as Hall County Fair, React craft shows, horse shows, or a circus.
Island Oasis: During the summer months, road-weary kids might like to spend an afternoon at Island Oasis Water Park, the only water park of its kind between Lincoln and Denver. Four giant waterslides, wave pool, lazy river, spraying fountains, wacky wet otter slide, log walk, and sand volleyball are just a few of the activities available.
Arts and Culture: Grand Island boasts several opportunities to experience the arts. The Grand Island Little Theatre offers five productions yearly in the newly renovated downtown theater. The Concert Association features national and international orchestras and musical groups.
Special Cultural Events: Visitors can enjoy the Central Nebraska Ethnic Festival, the Czechlanders Polka Festival, and the German flair of Leiderkranz. Music can be heard throughout the town during the Harvest of Harmony Parade, the annual Accordion Jamboree, and the Singing Christmas Tree.
History: Movie buffs will want to stop and check out Henry Fonda's home at the Stuhr Museum of the Prairie Pioneer. As one of the nation's top ten living history museums, the Stuhr Museum is open seven days a week. An outdoor railroad town, open from May to October, takes the visitor back in time as they watch the tinsmith and cabinet maker create goods like they did in the 1800s. Special events are held throughout the year.
