Halsey
Halsey is the home of the Nebraska National Forest and Bessey Nursery. The District encompasses 90,444 acres of gently rolling Sandhills interspersed with 20,000 acres of man-planted trees, including ponderosa pine, eastern redcedar, and jack pine. The Nebraska National Forest is the largest man-made forest in the United States. Climbing to the top of the Scott Lookout Tower, the traveler can see the trees and Sandhills for miles. The Nebraska 4-H camp nestled in the forest offers facilities available to the public. A public swimming pool is also located here. The Bessey Nursery at the entrance of the forest nurtures young trees. Seedlings are available in the spring. During the summer months, special weekend tours of the nursery are held, along with kid's games and a special trail walk. Camping, hiking, fishing, canoeing, and tubing are all available, as well as 300 miles of off-road trails for horses and ATVs.
