Ravenna
Just west of Cairo on the way to Ravenna, Highway 2 traverses a scenic and unusual remnant of the Nebraska Sandhills. A long, narrow sand ridge extends over 100 miles along the Loup River from west to east and includes many of the ecologic features of the greater Sandhills such as sand dunes, blow-outs, wet meadows, and seasonal lakes. These sandhills are drained by the South Loup and Middle Loup Rivers with access to excellent canoeing, tubing, and fishing in the spring and early summers, and hunting deer and water fowl in the fall. A few miles west along the South Loup River is the Loup Valley Muzzle Loaders campground, site of numerous summer activities attracting participants from many surrounding states. Just one mile west is the scenic Sweet Creek Valley bordering the massive Kemptar's Bluff and adjacent living snow fence of evergreen trees along the highway. Ravenna has long been known as the Nebraska town with the cheese plant. Ravenna is also the home of John and Jack Pesek, nationally known wrestlers.
